Debating the pros and cons of externally managed assets

At the Nordic Fund Selection Forum in Copenhagen earlier this fall we sat down with Erik Bennike from PensionDanmark, Magdalena Högberg from Swedish AP4 and John Hydeskov from AkademikerPension, for a panel discussion on the pros and cons of externally managed assets in portfolios. This is a summary of that discussion.

The session started with the panellists giving a brief presentation of where they are currently using external managers.

Erik Bennike: “I think it’s very asset class specific as to how much, why and how we use external managers. On the equity side there’s been a process of insourcing among many institutions, including ours. On the credit side it’s slightly different and overall, I think we’re very specific as to the different asset classes where we think it makes sense to manage in-house and where it makes sense to find external managers.
