Casting a wide net to find the best managers

In an interview with Tell Media Group, Fredrik Wilander – research director at Grieg Investor – talks about the luxury of following managers for longer periods of time, the importance of in-person meetings and the selectors curse.

Norwegian investment consultancy Grieg Investor, which was founded in 1998, currently provide advice on some NOK 200 billion for some 200 clients – covering a mix of larger pension funds, municipalities, foundations and family offices.

“This mix of clients is what makes the job really inspiring,” says Fredrik Wilander, research director at Grieg Investor. He adds that having demanding clients is what drives the development of the organisation. The company offers services across four areas; investment strategy, fund- and manager research, transactions [most clients invest in funds via a nominee structure meaning the external fund company will only have Grieg Investor as a counter party], and reporting – all via Enigma – a system developed in-house.
