Gustav Karner, CEO and CIO of Apotekets Pensionsstiftelse since 2017, talks about the importance of a strong network, his substantial hedge fund allocations, upcoming changes to the portfolio and the Christmas challenge he’s been emailing to his peers since early 2000.

When you search for Gustav Karner at LinkedIn and read his “About” section, it says: “Only ONE Negative Year, 2008. Down 0.6%”. Asked about how he’s done it, Gustav Karner says that there are many different reasons, but that having an excellent network helps a lot. The willingness and opportunity to use advanced instruments to protect the downside is another important factor.

“Coming here and working with the financial markets is my job, but it’s also my biggest personal interest. It’s something I spend time on also outside of working hours. I of course do other as well, such as golf – however so far without much success,” he says. Commenting on the importance of having an excellent network, Gustav Karner mentions that with a small internal organization they are dependent on good relationships with external analysts as well as having a knowledgeable investment committee.
